Family, Flowers & Farm Dreams: A Tribute to My Godmother

Before Helena Hills Farm had a name, a piece of land, or even a garden bed—there was a dream. And standing beside me in every step of that dream was my godmother and aunt, Karen.

My Aunt Karen has been one of the most important advisors and supporters in my journey to building this farm. Long before the soil was turned or chickens arrived, she was guiding me through my very first steps as a budding entrepreneur. She has this brilliant mind for business—thanks to her background in banking and finance—and it was her expertise that helped me shape my vision into a workable, strategic plan.
One of the most impactful ways she’s helped is through her role as a volunteer with SCORE, a national nonprofit organization that provides free mentorship and support to small business owners. SCORE mentors are seasoned professionals who generously give their time and knowledge to help people like me turn their business dreams into reality. Aunt Karen brought her wealth of experience to our very first meeting as a SCORE mentor and mentee. I came to her with big, sweeping ideas and she met me with open arms, saying, “Okay, let’s build this step by step.”
Now, every time I walk the farm, I see her fingerprints in the details—her advice guiding every decision I make. From branding and business structure to financial planning and community outreach, my Aunt Karen’s influence is everywhere.
She also has an incredible knowledge of the Bluffton and Hardeeville area—what’s growing here, what’s changing, and who’s doing what. She’s introduced me to an entire network of supporters, collaborators, and champions of Helena Hills Farm. She is constantly promoting the farm, helping me spread the word, and cheering me on.
On a more personal note, Aunt Karen shares my deep love for growing things. Her tomatoes are truly the best I’ve ever tasted—there’s no competition! Our bond over business is strong, but our shared love of gardening makes it even more special. One of the most meaningful things she tells me often is how proud my dad—her brother—would be of me. That I remind her of him in the way I approach my work and the way I dream big. I didn’t realize just how much that would mean to me, but it makes everything feel more connected—like he’s here too, guiding me through.

She even helps us carry on our Polish heritage by teaching us how to make her famous pierogies (if you’ve had them, you know). One of my favorite memories on the farm was hosting "Christmas Eve" with Aunt Karen, Uncle Dennis, and all their kids—gathering around to make pierogies and soak in the simple joy of being together. It was laughter, flour-covered counters, and traditions passed down with love.
So much of this farm is rooted in family, connection, and legacy—and Aunt Karen embodies all of that. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
HUGE thank you, Aunt Karen, for helping make Helena Hills Farm more than just a dream. It’s a living, growing reality—and you’ve helped plant every seed.
